SHILLONG: Ending all speculations, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has confirmed that he would contest the upcoming Assembly polls from both Songsak and Ampati constituencies.
Responding to queries, Sangma said, “Yes I have decided (that) I will contest from both the seats.”
The chief minister stated that he is not bothered about who NPP puts up against him from Ampati or Songsak. “How is it relevant to me,” Sangma told reporters.
The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a petition by one Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay seeking quashing of provisions under the Representation of People Act, 1951, which allow a person to contest election for the same office from two constituencies at the same time.
On being asked about the court matter, Sangma said candidates contest from two constituencies since the law provides that space. He added that earlier people used to contest from three seats.
“As long as the law provides, we will contest, if the law does not provide we will look at it,” he added.
Songsak constituency is represented by National People’s Party MLA Nihim D. Shira and Ampati by the chief minister.
