JOWAI: Leaders of the Co-ordination Committee on International Border Fencing between India and Bangladesh met Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council chief executive member, A Andrew Shullai on Wednesday and apprised him of the problems of the people residing along the India-Bangladesh international border.
The delegation urged the JHADC chief to cancel the no objection certificate issued by the autonomous district council to the West Jaintia Hills deputy commissioner.
“We do not want to be easy prey to the consequences of reckless border fencing like what had happened in the Garo Hills sector where residents of around 80 villages lying outside the border fencing were treated as foreigners.”
“They were deprived of any government scheme pertaining to basic needs like protection, ration, water supply, electricity, healthcare, education, etc simply because of the fact that they reside outside the border fencing but inside the Indian territory”, K Myrshiang, one of the CCIB leaders, said.
“Considering the plight of the people of the border areas we demanded that the NOC be cancelled immediately so that the ADCs constituted under the Sixth Schedule effectively deal with matters concerning the indigenous people and protect the rights of the people in the area,” he said.
