MAWKYRWAT: Many Congress members close to the party’s South West Khasi Hills district president Manstudy Nongrem have resigned over internal differences.
The members may join HSPDP.
The differences arose when a section of Congress members complained to Ranikor MLA MM Danggo against Nongrem accusing him of supporting HSPDP, said the disgruntled members on condition of anonymity. They further said that there were allegations that Nongrem, instead of supporting Congress’s Mawkyrwat candidate Carness Sohshang, is backing HSPDP’s Renikton L. Tongkhar.
Nongrem’s supporters said these accusations are “baseless” because it was Nongrem who gave Sohshang the chance to apply for ticket by not applying himself.
“If Sohshang and his leaders did not respect the man who gave him the chance to apply for ticket, then it will be useless for us to stay in the party,” the rebel members said after a meeting on Friday and added that many leaders from Jakrem, Mawthong, Mawsaw and other villages have decided to leave the party.
“Whether Nongrem quits or not but we have decided to go ahead and soon we will join HSPDP,” they said. The resignation letters have been submitted to the MPCC general secretary on Friday. With the joining of the Congress leaders, HSPDP received a shot in the arm and now they have high hope that they will win the next election.
