NONGPOH: The Mawhati circle of the United Democratic Party (UDP) has decided to forward the name of its district president and former MLA Donbok Khymdeit as the candidate for the 2018 Assembly elections.
Khymdeit was elected as MDC twice, in 1999 and 2004, and as MLA in 2008 beating former deputy speaker PW Muktieh from Mawhati constituency. He lost the 2013 election against Julius Dorphang, who is currently in jail, by a margin of 1,200 votes. Hundreds of the party workers who attended a meeting on Thursday extended support to Khymdeit.
Talking about cash for vote, Khymdeit said, “Those who use money power have a hidden agenda after winning the elections. People of Mawhati should not fall into such enticement because they will regret it later.”
Making an allusion to Umroi MLA Ngaitlang Dhar, Khymdeit said businessmen from Jaintia Hills are using the district as their political ground using money as their only tool to capture voters.
“People of Ri Bhoi should think properly so that their future will not be in the wrong hands,” he added.
