Kidnapped trader rescued

JOWAI: A coal trader who was kidnapped last week was rescued on Saturday morning and two suspected NDFB cadres were killed during a joint operation by East Jaintia Hills and Assam police and the Assam Rifles.
East Jaintia Hills SP N Lamare said Mahindra Rai, a Nepali trader from Jalaphet village, was kidnapped from Narwan in the district.
The investigating team found that the victim was kept hostage in a block in Assam Quarry in Dima Hasao.
“A team of the district police headed by circle inspector Subir Sangma, along with SIs PR Marak and L Kharsyntiew, raided the kidnappers’ camp,” Lamare said.
The district police were assisted by their Assam counterpart and Assam Rifles personnel in Dima Hasao.
The rescue operation started on Friday night and continued till Saturday morning.
Subir Sangma said the police team had asked the kidnappers to surrender but
one of them fired at the rescue team with a pistol. The police fired in retaliation and the man fell on the ground. “Immediately, another kidnapper came out of the thatched house, picked up the same weapon and fired at us. He was also shot at and the victim was rescued,” Sangma added. Both the kidnappers were later taken to Haflong Hospital where they succumbed to injuries.
The EPIC recovered from one of the deceased men shows the name Prasenjit Mushahary from Bashabeel village in Kokrajhar. The PAN card of the other showed Sonjoy Boro but his address could not be ascertained.
