SHILLONG: Four Congress MLAs, including a minister, are under the scanner of the Election Commission of India and the Income Tax Department in the run up to the Assembly polls.
The Election Commission (EC) and the Tax Department want to ascertain the source of their income, sources said.
According to sources, while legislators AL Hek, Prestone Tynsong and Comingone Ymbon responded to the income tax notices to explain the source of their wealth and income, Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh is yet to respond even after two reminders.
The I-T Department had examined the 2008 and 2013 affidavits of the MLAs and found increase in their income that may be unaccounted. EC and the I-T Department are to track the money trail of the contesting candidates.
Sources added that it was after demonetisation a year ago that the process of checking black money was followed up by the Income Tax Department.
However, further scrutiny of the wealth of politicians has come at a time when the state is preparing for the Assembly polls.
