Syiem is Front’s CM face

SHILLONG: The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) has declared PN Syiem as its chief ministerial candidate.
Syiem, who joined the party at a meeting at Polo 5th Ground on Tuesday, had till date remained tight-lipped on the role that he would be assigned in the newly formed PDF.
Syiem will also be the chairman of the party’s coordination committee, PDF chief Ivanlumlang Marbaniang said.
The president of the women’s wing, Grace Kharpuri, said the formation of the party had been mooted four and a half years ago.
Syiem, who is currently the chief executive member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, was suspended by the Congress for being a rebel.
Later, Marbaniang released the party’s slogan, “If not now, when (Mynta, ne lano pat)” while Syiem released the leaflet containing the 16-point agenda. The party also released a song on the day.
PDF’s agenda includes strengthening of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, ensuring clean governance, codifying laws protecting customs and traditions, ownership of land, fillip to tourism, and benefits to the poor, among others.
