SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul M Sangma inaugurated the new school building of Pomlum Secondary in Mylliem, under the Human Capital Development programme funded by Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Wednesday.
Speaking at the inaugural programme, the chief minister expressed happiness at having completed the building before the stipulated timeline. “It is pleasure in being able to respond to the people particularly the most vulnerable sections of the society,” he said. Sangma hoped that the school with the new building will help render better education to the people of Mylliem block.
The chief minister also informed that Mylliem block before it was restructured was the biggest block in Meghalaya, adding “The government has initiated lots of programmes but because of the big size of some of the blocks in the state implementing those programmes was really difficult.”
With the creation of new blocks better focus and undivided attention can be given by the government to all areas, the chief minister informed.
Sangma, while informing about the Human Capital Development programme said “The programme will not only improve and build infrastructures but will upgrade teaching and learning in secondary and higher secondary schools, improve technical and vocational education, upscale the skill of teachers by training and provide digital learning aids to students.”
45,000 youth will be given skill development training and education to empower them to be skilled work force thus enhancing their employability in various sectors besides generating sustainable livelihood opportunities, the chief minister said.
During the occasion the government notification for Mylliem C & RD was read out by BDO, Mylliem C & RD Block, P T Passah. The Chief Minister also unveiled the plaque for the newly re-organised Mylliem C & RD Block during the function.
Other who were present in the programme were Minister and Local MLA, R V Lyngdoh, the Syiem of Hima Mylliem and the Secretary of the School Managing Committee.
Later, Sangma inaugurated the Mawphlang Community Health Centre (CHC) in the presence of R V Lyngdoh, Minister of Urban Affairs, Kennedy Khyriem, MLA, Mawphlang and L. Blah, MDC, Mawphlang Diengiei Constituency and Myntri in Charge at Mawphlang.
Speaking to the gathering, Sangma expressed happiness at having the CHC even though the Foundation Stone for it was laid 17 years.
“The long wait has culminated in creation of this most crucial facility for the people and it gives me joy to dedicate it to the people of Mawphlang,” he said.
He also said that even the most developed nations are still grappling with the challenge of providing health care facilities for people and that Meghalaya has focused on this important sector.
“As in other states of the country the CHCs and hospitals remain under utilized because of lack of doctors and specialists. Non utilization of assets created with investment of public money is wrong”, said the Chief Minister.
He stated that with the establishment of two medical colleges in the state the gap between demand and supply of doctors, nurses and specialists will be addressed.
Sangma further added that the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) is an innovative and inclusive scheme and urged the people to take advantage of it.
He also encouraged the nurses and medical fraternity of Mawphlang CHC to serve the people with love, compassion and dedication and do justice to the aspirations of the people.
Director of Health Services (MI), Dr D. Lyngdoh and Dr E. Dkhar, DM & HO, East Khasi Hills were among those who spoke during the inauguration.
