SHILLONG: The youth wing of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has questioned the efforts of KHADC chief executive member PN Syiem and other MDCs in making laws for the betterment of indigenous people in the state.
In a statement issued here, Thomas Passah, president of the KHNAM youth wing, asserted that till date there have been no laws ensuring that only indigenous people have voting rights in district council elections.
It may be mentioned that KHNAM has time and again raised the issue of amendment to Rule 128 of the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils), Rules, 1951, to prevent non-tribals from taking part in the district council elections.
With the state going to the polls in just a few months, Passah argued that people can bring about change if they are willing to replace the sitting legislators with new ones.
