SHILLONG: The Supreme Court has listed the special leave petition filed by the state government on the education scam for January.
An official source said on Wednesday that after the petition was filed by the Education Department, the case was heard briefly by the court in mid-December.
The court, however, listed the matter sometime in January as it is on vacation till January 4.
The state government had appointed senior Supreme Court advocate Kapil Sibal to pursue the case.
The official added that the focus of the government is to modify the High Court order so that the non-tainted candidates can continue to serve as teachers.
Earlier on November 2, the High Court had asked the government to scrap the entire appointment of teachers carried out in 2010.
The court, while scrapping the entire recruitment process ruled that the non-tainted teachers can apply for the posts afresh irrespective of their age and the tainted teachers can appeal before the chief secretary to prove that they are not blemished.
The order also said that if the tainted teachers cannot substantiate before the committee that they are unblemished, they would not be allowed to apply for any government job in future.
The three-member committee formed on November 28 and headed by Chief Secretary Y Tsering received many representations from tainted candidates and the panel will have to submit the report to the Education Department within 60 days.
The court had also ordered a CBI probe into the criminal aspect of the scam involving politicians, besides carrying out another probe into all centres where examinations were conducted. The previous CBI probe covered only five centres.
The order was following the first CBI probe and the subsequent report of the state-appointed High Level Scrutiny Committee, which found large-scale anomalies in the recruitment process of teachers when the current Cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh was the education minister.
