Laptops awarded to meritorious students
SHILLONG: The Information and Technology Department on Friday handed over laptops to 204 meritorious students, who excelled in the Class X and Class XII Examinations 2017 of MBOSE, and Class XII Examination of the ISC and CBSE at Yojana Bhavan, Shillong. IT Minister Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh attended the programme as chief guest. Speaking at the programme, Lyngdoh said that it is a proud moment for parents to see that their children have excelled in the academic pursuit of merit while adding that it is also a proud moment for her that the Government has taken the initiative to acknowledge the efforts of the young minds in facing the challenges of this competitive world. “Parents should be the strong support system for their children and not pressurise them into doing something they are not interested and passionate about but rather allow and support them in pursue of their dreams,” the minister said. Others who spoke in the programme were Secretary IT, M R Synrem and Principal Consultant SeMT, IT and C, E Lyngwa.

Monitoring committee constituted
Shillong: The Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills in pursuance of Section 2 of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 informed that a District Monitoring Committee for the programmes and advertisements telecast by the cable television channels has been constituted. The Committee will take a decision on matters referred to it, and will determine whether a violation of the code has taken place and render advice on the further action to be taken to the Authorized Officer, he added. Further all such complaints to the Committee can be lodged at the Office of the Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations, East Khasi Hills.
3-day training on livelihood

improvement of farmers concludes
SHILLONG: A three-day training cum awareness programme on”Livelihood improvement of tribal farmers of Meghalaya through minimum and no-till pulses and oilseeds cultivation in rice/maize fallow”was organised by Division of Crop Production from December 18-20 at Agronomy Research Farm, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam under TSP with the objective of effectively utilizing the rice/maize fallow for enhancing farmers income and cropping intensity. Dr. Anup Das, Principal Scientist and Head (Division of Crop Production) inaugurated the programme and emphasised the importance of cultivation of pulses/oilseed crops in rice/maize fallow by adopting no-till/minimum till age technology. Das also explained about organic farming and growing of maize-frenchbean cropping system for better soil health and reduce cost of cultivation. Dr. Subhash Babu, Scientist (Agronomy) explained the details about the jalkund based farming system, vertical farming, different types of Integrated Farming System (IFS) models etc. Altogether 130 farmers from three villages (Umtung, Labansaru, Liarsluid) of Ri-Bhoi District, Meghalaya attended the programme.

Because We did Not Choose screening in Shillong
Shillong: An English-Welsh-Khasi-Pnar documentary Because We Did Not Choose directed by Wanphrang K Diengdoh will be held in Shillong at State Central Library on December 28 at 5pm. The entry for the screening is free.
Because We Did Not Choose examines the First World War and the involvement of indigenous communities at a time when spaces inhabited by them were transitioning and struggling to accommodate modernity and the rest of its implications. Researched and shot over a period of 4 years, the film examines the participation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo labourers in the theatres of First World War in France and (then) Mesopotamia.The film had its premiere in London in October at the Indian High Commission and has travelled all over the country including Jowai and Tura. The film first played in Shillong to a packed audience at a venue, 200 meters away from where the Khasi and Jaintia labourers left for the First World War, 100 years ago.

NEC releases 2018 calendar
Shillong: The 2018 NEC wall and desk Calendars were released with a colourful Christmas celebration at NEC Auditorium by C K Das, Member, NEC. The calendars feature exotic birds and animals of the North Eastern Region.The new website of NEC was also inaugurated by Ram Muivah, IAS, Secretary, NEC. The new website www.necouncil.gov.in has many distinct features and connectivity with website of other ministries.

Ringgi festival concludes
Shillong: The conclusion of Ringgi festival of Dadenggre was held on December 20. It was organised by Association for Dadenggre Development (ADD) which was formed by six combined NGOs-ADE, FKJGP, AWYO,ASWA,FAF,AAYF,of Dadenggre. The festival started on December 18 with a dance competition and on December 19 a marathon race was held along with many traditional games and sports like wapong sikgrika,anding oka, tug of war, long jump,high jump,100 metre 200 metre race etc. It concluded on December 20 with an open air concert in which many local bands and band of rongram participated. The chief Guest was Swapnil Tembe (IAS)Dadenggre Sub-Divisional officer (civil).

USTM campus drive
Shillong: A mega recruitment drive was held at the campus of University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) on December 21 where in more than 1500 students from institutions across the North East appeared for interviews with HR professionals of six reputed Chennai-based companies working in diverse fields. The drive has been organised by ICT Academy in association with the Regional Institute of Science and Technology (RIST) & USTM and it has been supported by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).Inaugurating the Campus Drive, the USTM Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque called upon the participating students to be innovative with new ideas so that apart from getting a job, they can also become employers in the future. He said that the fresh students need to look for organisations having good culture and background to work with, rather than measuring the salary while starting their professional career, a USTM communique said.The employment drive has been organised through “Link 2017” that engages itself in organising campus drive across the country.

Convocation programme
Shillong: The Convocation Programme of Computer and Languages Units of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Quinton Road was held on December 21 where Br. (Dr.) Albert L Dkhar SDB, Principal, St Anthonys College, was the Chief Guest In his address to the youth, the Brother highlighted the immense possibility of growth that the youth of the country has particularly the youths of this region. In his interactive speech he urged the youths to make use of technology in a way that it doesn’t rule over them and they should be able to do simple things even without gadgets and gizmos. In his address as guest of honour, Swami Anuraganandaji Maharaj, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission, Cherrapunji, inspired the students to add value to their life and make a worship of everything they do. He said only this way they can make “Kingdom of heaven within” themselves and spread it around them.During the function the centre distributed certificates to about 460 of its trainees, who had received a two-month long training in various subjects of Computer, English and communication skills, personality skills, etc. 

Seminar on mathematics held
Shillong: The two-day national seminar on Mathematics education was inaugurated on December 21 at North east Regional Institute of Education, (NCERT) Umiam. Prof Bidyadhar Barthakur, Principal, NERIE, welcomed the delegates from all parts of the country and gave a brief introduction of the institute while highlighting the objectives of the seminar. Arnab Sen, Assistant Professor gave a background stating that the seminar is a series of similar activities conducted by NCERT at all other RIEs to commemorate the birth anniversary of the great Indian mathematician, S. Ramanujan and the seminar in NERIE completed the cycle. Floral tributes were also paid to Ramanujan on this occasion. Prof Subash Chandra Roy, Dean of Instruction at NERIE apprised the house of the initiatives taken by NCERT for improving mathematics education in the country. Prof A. K Rajput, Professor NCERT and Head, Department of Elementary Education and guest of honour stated that the focus now is not only on content mastery but also the mastery of competencies. Prof Tarini Kumar Dutta, retired professor and head, department of mathematics Gauhati University, a renowned mathematician and the keynote speaker for the day spoke on the “Beauty of mathematics and its applications to the natural world”.
