SHILLONG: Members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) and Shillong Press Club (SPC) on Friday shared the spirit of Christmas with 24 orphans and their surrogate mothers at the Annie Margaret Barr Children’s Village in the quaint hamlet of Kharang in East Khasi Hills.
The Village is home to 10 boys and 14 girls, the youngest being a girl. The children study in the village school. The orphanage home has been running on donations from well-wishers. The boys’ home was constructed at over Rs 40 lakh about 400 meters away from the girls’ home, which has been receiving assistance from the Social Welfare Department since last year.
The orphanage is an initiative of the Unitarian Union in memory of Annie Margaret Barr, Unitarian Minister who set foot in the Khasi Hills and worked extensively among the tribes of the Khasi, Jaintia and Karbis.
The Village gets financial help from the church and in the form of donations, besides fees from the 30 students in the local play school.
