SHILLONG: The ride to Mawthadraishan Peak is quite a bumpy one. The signboard put up by Meghalaya Tourism, ‘Welcome to Mawthadraishan Peak’, West Khasi Hills greets tourists with 9km of kaccha road.
On reaching the peak, which is about 76 km from Shillong, visitors might say that the view is worth the bumpy ride. The peak offers a view of the natural ponds with patches of dense forest cover around. The reflection of green in the water makes the ambience surreal.
“Early in the morning one can catch a view of the plains of Assam and also get a clear view of the Himalayas on clear days,” said a local.
A local girl who sells edibles at the peak said visitors often come from nearby villages and the peak is quite packed on January 1.
“People here mostly depend on agriculture. Their products are marketed to Markasa village, Nongstoin, Shillong and other places,” said a shopkeeper.
