SHILLONG: The Election Department has used graffiti to covey messages on ethical voting and to encourage people to vote besides ensuring enrolment of new voters.
Even before the political parties resorted to drumming up people’s support, the state election department had put up graffiti as a means to reach out to people.
The messages of wall paintings include ‘say no to note, value your vote, rule by your vote, you count because you vote and you vote because you count, our identity is not for sale’ among others.
There are also messages for those who are above 18 on how to apply for entry in voters’ list and also for deletion of names in more than two places.
The chief electoral officer, Frederick Kharkongor, said he had engaged students and artists to draw graffiti to attract the attention of passers-by.
The graffiti is also used as a medium to allay fears about the use of EVMs and VVPAT.
“Seeing is believing, view your votes for seven seconds on VVPAT,” reads a graffiti.
Accessible election
The election department has provided various facilities for the disabled to vote without any hurdles and the messages in this regard have also found place in the graffiti.
Kharkongor said that the Election Department was committed to providing facilities for easy access to disabled voters.
