SHILLONG: The working president of Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM), Adelbert Nongrum observed that a concerted effort by both tribals and genuine non-tribals would be required to fight against the influx of illegal immigrants in the state.

He was addressing party functionaries at the confirmation programme of party office bearers of KHNAM 17 North Shillong Constituency Committee held at Dorbar Hall Mission Compound on Saturday.

Nongrum stated that the regional political party did not oppose the genuine non-tribals who have been residing in the state for a very long time but the party was against the influx of illegal immigrants in the state.

He expressed concern that the crores of people who were found to be illegal immigrants in Assam might cross over to the state and slammed other politicians who use illegal immigrants as their vote bank only to strengthen their position as legislators.

Stating that KHNAM is not only a political party but also a political movement, he said that the party strived to bring about changes in the society as per the aspirations of the people.

The party on the occasion also observed a minute’s silence to mourn the demise of general secretary Batkupar Wahlang.
