Umiam truck lay-by to be completed soon
SHILLONG: The truck lay-by near the scenic Umiam Lake, which has been delayed for a few years, will be completed shortly.
A PWD official said the retaining wall is complete and only bitumen work is left.
“The bitumen work will start this month and it will be completed within 10 days since the truck lay-by is small,” the official added. PWD has come up with the idea of the lay-by so that Shillong-bound trucks can be parked there when they are not allowed to enter the city during the day. As the lay-by is located near the lake, it can also be used by tourists to park their vehicles and enjoy the scenic beauty.
Mawlai-Umiam road far from satisfactory
SHILLONG: Driving on the Mawlai-Umiam road is still far from satisfactory as it is uneven in many places.
Though the potholes have been patched up, the condition of the road is not up to the mark.
The road is bumpy in many places and there is hardly any safety sign or road markings.
Earlier, Shillong MP Vincent Pala had also asked Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to intervene in the matter.
Villages without mobile network
SHILLONG: Umstein village and adjacent areas near Lumshnong area were affected in the absence of proper mobile network for the last one week.
Local leaders led by Gabriel Lippon informed that while seven villages depend on mobile network of Airtel, there was interruption in the service .
The villagers, who are in dire straits, pointed out that though they lodged complaint with the company, corrective steps were not taken.
Police vigil during polls
SHILLONG: The spurt in the activities of ULFA (I) in the neighbouring state is a cause of worry ahead of the upcoming polls for the police since Meghalaya shares 900 km border with Assam.
With the polls round the corner, the Meghalaya police are making efforts to ensure better law and order situation in the State especially in Garo Hills.
However, a police official said there should not be any worry since the police will thwart any attempt of ULFA to have tie-up with GNLA to carry out subversive activities in Meghalaya.
