Editor,
Apropos your editorial titled ‘Cricket Gone National’ (ST Jan 5, 2018) regarding Vidharbha’s maiden Ranji Trophy title. It was a wonderful piece highlighting how cricket is moving away from its traditional stronghold of Mumbai into the hinterland. However, I would like to bring to your notice that some of the facts mentioned in that piece are incorrect. You mentioned that coaches Chandrakant Pandit and Subroto Banerjee never donned the India cap but both these players have actually played for the country. While Pandit played 5 Test Matches and 36 ODIs for the country, Subroto Banerjee represented India in a Test match and 6 ODIs. Though they didn’t have remarkable run at the top level to term them as uncapped is factually incorrect. I hope you and your team would dig a little deep into the stats in the future.

End to noise pollution
Editor,
The UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has done a remarkable thing by banning loudspeakers at all religious places including Mosques, Temples and Gurudwaras. After air pollution, noise pollution has become a big problem in our country so it was needed to stop this. The ban on noise pollution will give relief to patients, elderly persons and students. Hence there is need to replicate this legislation all over India to enable people to live in a peaceful environment. The Centre and State Governments should come forward to stop noise pollution at all religious places and allow us the citizens to heave a sigh of relief! .

Need to vote wisely
Editor,
Apropos the news report stating that the CM Dr Mukul Sangma has termed the BJP as the devil, I wish to put this question to all Ministers in the MUA-2 cabinet, led by Sangma. Can each one of you put your hands to your heart and swear upon the Bible that you never stole even a penny from the state exchequer? Did you not divert some funds into your own pockets from each Department you held? The CM himself held nearly 18 departments so one can imagine how he played around with each of them. By terming the BJP as the devil, Sangma is considering himself to be holier than thou. Mukul Sangma is trying to scare the Christian voters against the BJP so that they will gravitate towards the Congress out of fear. This ploy will not work because people are now wise enough to know that they cannot trade one thing for another. People should learn to boldly vote for the party and individuals they believe will bring change. People should defeat those who are cocksure of winning their seats such as AL Hek and Sanbor Shullai since the BJP has already counted these two seats as their own. I wonder how the BJP has embraced all these individuals merely to win seats. I never imagined that the BJP would make such compromises just to win the much coveted seats. So how is the BJP different from the Congress or the NPP? People should also defeat all those turncoats who have joined the NPP recently. These MLAs have benefitted from the Congress culture of corruption and have made their money and now they all blame Mukul Sangma for not giving them a free hand. This time people should vote the regional parties and give them a chance to prove themselves. I am a non-tribal but I am also a citizen of Shillong and in every aspect I think like a tribal and I care for this state and for Shillong my home.
I am also appalled at Mukul Sangma’s defense of Ampareen Lyngdoh, his loyalist and former Education Minister who was involved in the education scam. So aggrieved is Mukul Sangma that he has even cast aspersions on the CBI and called it a caged parrot. But wasn’t the CBI a caged parrot during the UPA I & II regime? Did he say anything about the CBI then? It is clear that Mukul Sangma is a desperate man because a new government will not spare those involved in the Education scam that marred the future of so many teachers who genuinely qualified and of the thousands of school children who could have benefitted from their teaching.
I hope that people will vote to empower themselves and not to become slaves of MLAs and ministers. Jai Hind!
Yours etc.,
