SHILLONG: The convener of Maitshaphrang Movement, Michael Syiem, has maintained that Assembly election candidates should furnish a marriage registration certificate while filing their nomination papers as per the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2012.
He pointed to the mandatory clause in the Act that a married man and woman should compulsorily furnish a marriage certificate for all official purposes.
Speaking reporters, he told reporters on Tuesday, “Since election is also an official purpose. It should be made mandatory for all candidates to submit their marriage certificate during filing nominations.”
“It is the first test for the Act, to see how effective the Act is. We want to see the reaction of the government. Most government department have not yet implemented the Act,” he added.
Syiem met the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), F.R. Kharkongor to urge the effective implementation of the Act in which he was informed by Kharkongor that the matter will be taken up with the Law department.
It may be mentioned the Act states, “Whereas, further it is mandatory for married man and married woman to compulsorily furnish a marriage certificate for all official purposes.”
