New Year clash kills 1
SHILLONG: A clash between two groups of youths in East Garo Hills on the first day of 2018 led to the death one. Sengdon Shira and others from Chidimit Namesa village lodged a complaint that on December 31, 2017, two persons, Changki N Marak and Binash CH Marak, went to Kalak Songgital village in East Garo Hills to celebrate New Year. They stayed in a relative’s house. Around 4 am the next day, unidentified boys attacked them in the Model School compound in the village. The injured boys were taken to the community healthcare centre in Williamnagar but the doctor on duty declared Changki brought dead.

One dies in accident
SHILLONG: One person died on the spot after the vehicle he was driving fell into a gorge at Sumer Umbang in Ri Bhoi. Police said that the incident happened on January 7 around 11.25 pm, when one truck (AS-01HC-5257) driven by Anil Kumar Ray fell into a gorge.

Bernard releases CD on hill tribe reservation
SHILLONG: Former chairman of ANVC-B Bernard N Marak recently released a CD on the Agreed Text for Settlement in Tura. He said the CD explains the provisions reserved for hill tribes and how the agreement signed between the Centre and the two factions of ANVCs is going to change the entire corrupted system that controls the autonomy of the hill tribes. The CD also explains the history of the Garos and reservations for the hill people along with the formation of the Protection and Empowerment of the Tribal Rights and Autonomy in the Hills, or PETRAH, Marak said. “The CD is in Garo and is free. However, if anyone wishes to contribute to PETRAH, it is solicited,” he added.

AR parade
SHILLONG: The attestation parade of 150 recruits of 319 Batch of the Assam Regimental Centre was held on Monday at Parsons Parade Ground of the centre. The parade was reviewed by Brig RK Gaikwad, Commandant, Assam Regimental Centre.

Defence residential complex inaugurated
Shillong: The Controller General of Defence Accounts, Veena Prasad, IDAS, inaugurated the new Defence Accounts Residential Complex at S.E. Falls, Demseiniong, Shillong. In her address, Veena Prasad stressed the need to recalibrate the efforts put by the Defence Accounts Department to maximise clients’ satisfaction.
