SHILLONG: Former Nongkrem legislator Lambor Malngiang has alleged that Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has not given due attention to the overall development of the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region despite having the qualities of a good leader.
Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the Seng Samla Shnong Mawlynnei Nongkrem’s foundation day event in East Khasi Hills on Tuesday, Malngiang said the people of Khasi-Jaintia Hills are upset with the chief minister as desired attention has not been paid to the problems plaguing the region.
According to Malngiang, the chief minister’s focus was to develop only one particular region of the state which did not go down well with residents of other parts of Meghalaya.
Furthermore, the former MLA alleged that major projects meant for the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region never took off and were, in fact, diverted elsewhere.
Making it clear that he had nothing against the Congress, Malngiang said his supporters want him to contest the upcoming polls as an independent candidate and hence he has not sought a Congress ticket.
Asked about the perceived turmoil the state Congress finds itself in, Malngiang said it was an open secret that all is not well with the Congress, evident from the fact a large number of MLAs have deserted the party.
However, he refused to comment when asked to assess the performance of sitting MLA Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit. “People are the best judge,” was his terse reply. Malngiang felicitated meritorious students of SSLC and HSSLC at the event. Youths who have played a notable role for the betterment of the village received a special award from the former legislator.
