Lay-by market inaugurated
Nongpoh: Celestine Lyngdoh, MLA and minister in charge of PHE on Tuesday inaugurated the lay-by market of NH-6 at Dulongnar village under Umsning constituency. The construction of the lay-by market was sanctioned under a Rs 1crore scheme.The market has one mini restaurant, 15 fruit shops and one use and pay toilet.Lyngdoh lauded the efforts taken by the officers of DRDA for releasing the money as well as to speed up work for the benefit of the people. He said there were many schemes and projects implemented by the state and central government to support and strengthen the livelihood of the people “However, some schemes are delayed owing to lack of understanding and cooperation among the villagers which hamper the development of the community,” Lyngdoh said. He appreciated the gesture by the residents of Dulongnar to offer land for construction of the lay-by market in their village and urged them to utilise and maintain it properly. The MLA also stressed the need to promote organic cultivation as well as marketing of organic food.

Promote farmers’ interests: JSU
SHILLONG: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has alleged that the state government has failed to promote the interests of farmers. Led by its president, R.N Parien, the JSU has sent a memorandum to the District Agriculture Officer, W. Marbaniang and to the Deputy Commissioner, demanding procurement of fertilisers and manure.The DAO has assured the JSU that he would take the matter seriously. The union has urged state government to promote agriculture in the state.

Health awareness event
Shillong: A one-day workshop on Health Awareness was organised by the Directorate of Field Publicity Shillong Region, at the Presbyterian Church of India Conference Hall Shillong on Wednesday. The workshop was inaugurated by Director NERCoRMP, K Hrishikesh Singh. The workshop was on the themes Intensified Mission Indradhanush, TB, Leprocy and Mission Parivar Vikas.
During the inaugural session, Director NERCoRMP Hrishikesh Singh stressed on adequate nutrition in addition to awareness on vaccination. He also added that the period of 1000 days from conception till the second birthday is the most impactful in a child’s life and hence the 1000 days from conception can break inter-generational deficiency through poverty. Elaborating on the themes, Director of Health Services, Government of Meghalaya, Dr B Mawthoh stressed the need for intensified coverage of Mission Indradhanush which was launched from January 8 across the state. She added that the most cost effective method of battling illnesses is through immunization.
Dr Engam Pame, Director , DFP urged all Field Officers to encourage change and opined that DFP’s foot soldiers can make a significant change in media shadow areas.The workshop was attended by Field Officers of DFP, Officials of PIB, All India Radio, Doordarshan and Directorate of Health Services.

GST e-waybills workshop held
NONGPOH: A daylong workshop on E-Waybills GST for dealers and transporters of the district was organised by the Office of the Superintendent of Taxes, Ri Bhoi District in the Community Hall Sajer, Nongpoh on Wednesday. H.Engleng, Superintendent of Taxes, Ri Bhoi, inaugurated the workshop. The objective of the workshop was to demonstrate the need and importance of E-Waybills GST for dealers and transporters.L.Passah and A.Nongpiur, both inspectors of taxes, were the resource persons. They spoke on E-Waybills GST, as a document to be carried while moving goods within the state and inter-state. The programme was attended by over 100 dealers and transporters under the jurisdiction of the Superintendent of Taxes, Ri Bhoi District.

Scouts and Guides meet
Shillong: The Meghalaya Bharat Scouts & Guides will conclude the national level tribal meet for Scouts/Guides/Rovers/Rangers on January 12 at its State Headquarters, Pine Mount Ridge, Shillong, from 4pm. The Director of Sports & Youth Affairs Matsiewdor War has consented to grace the valedictory function as the Chief Guest. The programme will be comprised of distribution of prizes for the various competitions held throughout the meet and the Grand Camp Fire where participants will enthrall the guests with performances such as tribal dance, folk songs and traditional music.Participants from all over the country who have camped and attended the meet will also be participating in the Meghalaya National Youth Day Run organised by the District Sports Officer, Govt. of Meghalaya. Following the run they will head back to the headquarters where they will assemble and stride together for the National Integration Tribal Youth Route March to be flagged off at 11am by the SP, East Khasi Hills.

Arms licence update till March
TURA: Arms licence holders from West Garo Hills have been given time till March 31, 2018 to approach the licensing authority to get necessary data uploaded in National Database for Arms Licences.The district magistrate who issued the notification informed that the last date for renewal or to obtain the Unique Identification Number (UIN) is March 31.”After that, licences shall be cancelled and arms seized by police. No arms licence shall be considered valid without the UIN with effect from April 1,” the official said.

Need for parity in social schemes
SHILLONG: There is a need for bringing parity between the CM’s Social Assistance Scheme implemented by the Social Welfare Department and the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), a centrally sponsored scheme implemented by Community and Rural Development Department, it was found during a recent social audit. The state government organised a two-day National Convention on Social Audit last month to share the findings of social audit by the Programme Implementation and Evaluation Department. The state has sanctioned Rs 431.27 lakh for old age pensioner, Rs 58.82 lakh for widows and Rs 11.62 lakh for disabled pensioner for bringing at par the quantum of assistance between the two schemes. The amount assisted under CM’s Social Assistance Scheme is Rs 500 per month per beneficiary for the infirms, widows and disabled pensioner. Under NSAP, assistance per beneficiary to a pensioner is Rs 250 per month, including an amount of Rs 50, topped up by the state government.
