Mawkyrwat: With a view to boost the confidence of the voters and clear misconceptions about the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs), a training cum awareness mock exercise on EVMs with verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) was held for political parties at the Multipurpose Hall, Laitlawsang here on Thursday.
The VVPAT will be used for the first time in all the polling stations of the district in the next elections.
VVPAT is an independent system attached to the EVM which allows the voter to see on the screen of the machine a printed copy containing the serial number, name and symbol of the candidate of his choice and the vote cast.
A voter having a dispute on its performance will have to make a declaration in a form meant for the purpose and will be booked under Section 177 IPC if caught cheating. The mock exercise on VVPAT will make one aware on the use of such machines during elections.
Representatives of political parties who witnessed the mock exercise included W. Wanniang, Kyrshanbor Syiemlieh and Livingwell Syiemlieh of HSPDP, S.S. Lyngdoh, S.L. Paliar and L.H. Pariong of NPP, Koland Lyngdoh and Lawanbiangpor Marwein of PDF, Brosporly Syiemlieh of BJP and Habanjop Syiemiong of Congress.
