SHILLONG: Weary of underdevelopment in Pynthorumkhrah constituency, an advocate of the Meghalaya High Court and Sessions Court has decided to throw her hat in the ring to bring about change.
Aneeta Synrem, who will be an independent candidate in the Assembly elections, said Pynthorumkhrah is underdeveloped despite being represented by four-time MLA AL Hek who recently joined BJP.
“There are no street lights or drainage system. I can do better for the people of the constituency,” she told reporters on Friday.
Synrem said she would raise the issue of safety and security of women in the Assembly.
The advocate clarified that contradictory to rumours she was still in the election race.
“Women should not be confined within the four walls of the house and should be given a chance to serve the society,” she said.
Synrem, who was a teacher for 10 years before she left the job to study law, admitted that it would be a daunting task for her to face a veteran politician like Hek but expressed confidence of getting the Pynthorumkhrah seat. “It depends on the people to see the potential in me. People have started losing faith in him (Hek) and he is also losing ground. I am not here to make wealth,” she said and added that she does not own a house and stays in a rented one.
