SHILLONG: Pynshngain N Syiem of the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) has claimed that fielding of former bureaucrats and engineers will not help the Congress win the upcoming Assembly polls.
Speaking to media persons here on Saturday, Syiem said former bureaucrats and engineers have “absolutely no political and social background and they don’t share close relationship with the people at the grassroots level”.
The remark comes after the Congress said it had better candidates in the constituencies represented by its former legislators who left the party and joined other parties.
The former Congress leader and KHADC chief executive member will face two bureaucrats — HM Shangpliang from his erstwhile party and Olanding Suin of UDP — in Mawsynram.
The Congress is fielding former DC Jopthiaw Lyngdoh from Nartiang. However, other parties too have former bureaucrats on their lists of candidates.
“This will not work because we need lawmakers and not engineers. The Congress is just making claims for something that will never happen,” said Syiem.
