Gambegre MLA joins NCP in Meghalaya

SHILLONG: Joining the bandwagon, another independent MLA who represents Gambegre constituency  , Saleng Sangma  on  Monday  resigned from the post of MLA and officially  joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) here in Shillong.

Speaking to media persons after joining the party,  Saleng Sangma said that he does not want to create a vacuum  between Khasi, Jaintia and Garos like the Congress Chief Ministers.

Slamming Mukul Sangma, he  said that the Chief Minister was not serious about Khasi Hills and he was laying foundation stones and inaugurating projects in Garo Hills  even as he questioned the former Chief Minister, DD Lapang   for not doing much for Garo Hills.

“ This attitude has to change,” he said.

Responding to a query, he said that the ouster of Sanbor Shullai from the party did not mean the end of road for the NCP in Meghalaya while pointing out that the party was looking for prospective candidates from South Shillong constituency.

“We might announce few candidates tomorrow,” he said, adding that there are possibilities that the  South Tura MP John Leslee  Sangma may also joined NCP later

Saleng Sangma who has also been appointed as the new party president in Meghalaya   saying the saffron party apart from  their Hindutva agenda is trying to bring back the caste system in the country.

“ Though some tribal people have joined BJP but they will be always put in  the last bench and not in front bench,” he  said while accusing the BJP of suppressing their own people .

Making it clear that the NCP will not have alliance with anybody, Saleng added  the NCP was a clean and  it is not against any caste,  creed or community.

Earlier,  he said that now it was his responsibility to build the party in the state  with the people and he wanted people of the state to be happy.

Saleng also lamented that  Meghalaya is totally backward now  and Shillong should have been the educational hub as it was before  besides now even people from here go outside for tourism purpose.

“We will try to make a difference,” he said

Meanwhile, the a host of top leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party  including P Rumnong from  Pynthorumkhrah mandal and Vikash Gupta,  a BJP leader  from the city also joined the NCP
