SHILLONG: After one and a half years, the mysterious death of the 16-year-old girl from Umlyngka in Upper Shillong has taken a new twist with police suspecting rape and murder.
The girl went missing from her house at Umlyngka on July 24, 2016, and later her body was recovered from Damsite, Umiam, on July 29.
The family had earlier said the girl came out of the house after receiving a phone call.
While the post mortem report was inconclusive, the FSL report from Hyderabad is still awaited.
SP (city) Spill Thamar said in July 2016, a missing case was first registered and subsequently the kidnapping under Section 365 of the IPC was added.
Thamar said as per the investigation, which is yet to be completed, 60 persons were quizzed by the police.
“It appears that there is a rape and murder angle which is being looked into,” the SP (city) said.
The face of the girl was partially charred and her hair was burnt, which gave rise to the suspicion about the murder angle.
Thamar added that the investigating officer will be asked to examine the murder angle and to add this angle in his case.
The police officer said that charge sheet will be filed as quickly as possible.
