SHILLONG: The state unit of Republican Party of India (A), a faction of RPI led by Ramdas Athawale, is likely to field candidates in 10 seats.
“We will announce the candidates by this week as leaders of the party will come from Delhi to project candidates. There are some candidates but we will not reveal now,” state secretary of RPI, Alpha S. Kharkongor said.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Kharkongor said the central leaders of RPI, including North East observer, Vinod Nikaljee will visit the state soon.
He said a committee will be formed to screen the candidates as well.
Kharkongor said the state unit of the party was yet to decide in regard to matters of alliance with other political parties.
RPI is an ally of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre with Athawale being the Union Minister of state for social justice and empowerment.
Kharkongor said though RPI is in alliance with BJP, yet it has a different style of functioning.
He said the focus of the party would be the underprivileged classes.
However, he refused to comment on whether the underprivileged classes in the state have been able to get their due.
