Editor,

This is in reference to my letter of Sep 21, 2017) that the park is being worked out by the concerned authority to restore it to its former beauty. Twigs which are a hindrance to the pedestrian have been trimmed. To add to the beauty of the park there is a need to drain and clean the polluted lake (Nan Kasari) adjacent to it. Hopefully its caretaker would look after the matter without hesitating. It may be mentioned that there is also one tree in front of the SSA office near Iawmusiang playground which may pose a  danger to the pedestrians  if not taken down immediately. This was already  mentioned in the vernacular papers ( sometime in December 2017. As a concerned citizen of Jowai Town I hope that my voice will be heard and the authorities will not turn a deaf ear.

Lets embrace the religion of love

Editor,

Sujit De’s letter, “Time to rise above religion!” (ST Jan 16 2017) on the teachings and beliefs of Swami Vivekananda gave us a chance to reflect upon our actions, behaviours and most importantly our way of thinking. In today’s world and age, we human beings are becoming more selfish and less tolerant. It is the self that comes well before anyone else. Ambition, aspiration and being competitive are teachings and habits that we inculcate into the minds of our children who grow up with these teachings. However, what is alarming is that while teaching our children to have ambitions and compete in order to achieve their goals we forget to instil into their minds and hearts the need to be good, ethical and compassionate. Once these moral values are implanted in their young minds they become part of their individual selves and are fully embedded within their beings. Thereby they will grow up with these values as human beings blessed with the spirit of love and care for their fellow human beings. What could then be the greatest religion than the religion that upholds fellow feelings and love on every creation of God? Surely the world then will definitely be a better place to live in!

End of Haj subsidy; Why not abolish it earlier

Editor,

The Union Government should be complimented for yet another bold decision to end Haj-subsidy in one go – a step welcomed by all including Muslim-community and even the main opposition party the Congress. But the big question is why Congress could not take the much-desired step during its own regime. The bitter fact remains that except for the present ruling party at the Centre and some small political groups, all other major political parties till now used to stick to minority-appeasing policy simply for vote-bank politics which were in fact harmful for even the Muslim community. The present Central Government has already marched ahead with similar other bold steps like on Triple Talaq which have given minority-women a sigh of relief where men in their community though publicly admitting a bad practice, but opposed legislation in this regard as interference in religious matters.

The Union Government should take steps to ban multi-marriage by a Muslim man for a further step in the welfare of Muslim-women. It is noteworthy that even most Islamic countries do not allow multi-marriages by men.

The ideal is to implement the Uniform Civil Code where the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee once in Lok Sabha clarified that Uniform Civil Code does not mean law of majority community for all. Rather he emphasized that good aspects from all religions like compulsory consent of girl for marriage as per Islamic Law would be considered for an ideal Uniform Civil Code.
