Zenith kicks off poll campaign from Rangsakona
SHILLONG: Youth and Sports Affairs Minister Zenith Sangma kicked off the election campaign from his constituency Rangsakona on Wednesday. Addressing a gathering of 7,000-odd people at the convention of the Rangsakona Block Mahila Congress committee held at Ambari playground near Garobada, Sangma and other leaders present highlighted the issues of women empowerment. They also spoke about the role of women in politics and electioneering. The leaders also highlighted about economic empowerment under financial inclusion programme of the state government. Among the leaders who attended the rally were Salmanpara MLA Winnerson D. Sangma, Rangsakona Block Mahila Congress president Bina Marak, vice president Salma D Shira and district president Indira R Marak.

BJP leader moves NGT over Mawiong dump yard
SHILLONG: BJP’s Gagan Jain has petitioned the National Green Tribunal complaining that there is utter contempt of the NGT order at the dump yard at Mawiong.
In a petition to Justice Swatanter Kumar of the Tribunal, Jain said there was utter contempt of the NGT order about prohibiting burning of solid waste at the dump yard that leads to emission of toxic fumes 24×7 polluting the environment.

Trucks flout NH parking rule in Ri Bhoi
SHILLONG: As many as 48 coal trucks flouting the Ri Bhoi deputy commissioner’s order were detected on the National Highway-6. Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner CP Gotmare said the administration has prohibited parking of more than two trucks on a particular stretch on the highway but trucks often make efforts to line up on the highway and evade the weighbridge. Andreas JG Momin, enforcement inspector (transport), lodged a complaint that on Monday afternoon, 48 coal trucks were seen parked on NH-6. Last Sunday, around 1.40 am, police detected and seized two coal-laden trucks, driven by Harkanta Barman & Khitish Ch Hajong, at Thakurbari in Tura while transporting coal without valid documents in violation of NGT order.

EC team holds pre-poll training in WGH
TURA: A training programme for booth level officers (BLOs) in West Garo Hills was organised on Wednesday. A team of officials from the Election Commission conducted the session for the BLOs on SVEEP, EVM and VVPAT. A regulatory audit and verification and in-depth study and analysis of election related activities were also held.Inspection of the EVM warehouse, log books, registers, photo electoral rolls and disposed forms 6, 7, 8 and 8A was conducted in the district. The EC team met political leaders and representatives at DRDA Multi-facility Centre. Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer of the district Ram Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner and Electoral Registration Officer SB Marak and assistant electoral registration officers were present during the regulatory audit.

Pynthorumkhrah BJP Mandal to be revamped
SHILLONG: The Shillong City BJP District Committee convened a meeting on Wednesday at the state BJP office to discuss issues concerning the BJP Mandal Committee of Pynthorumkhrah after the resignation of its president recently. Members of the BJP Mandal Committee decided that the existing committee be dissolved. Phillby Lyngdoh, the former general secretary, will convene a meeting to constitute a new body. Former MLA AL Hek, who’s now the state BJP chairman of the Election Campaign Committee, and Shillong City BJP District Committee spokesperson SL Khyriem attended the meeting.

HNYF pitches for SSLC exam centres in Ri Bhoi
SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), northern region has demanded examination centres for students who are set to appear for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination in Umsiang, Umtrai, Korhadem, Sonidan and Umsohlait areas under Ri-Bhoi district. Addressing reporters on Wednesday, president of HNYF, northern region, Marcus Marten said students from Mawhati have to travel 70 km-80 km to Umsning, Nongpoh and Byrnihat to write their SSLC examinations. There are five secondary schools (ad hoc grant schools) of which there are between100 and 130 students and over 200 repeaters. In this connection, the HNYF along with a delegation of traditional heads from Mawhati met and submitted a memorandum to the joint director of Meghalaya Board of School Education, M. Marbaniang who assured that the needful would be done only in 2019. Marbaniang informed them that for the time being, preparations for holding the SSLC examination of 2018 were in full swing and the matter could only be taken up the next year. Meanwhile, member of Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong, Marius Jyrwa informed that it was the second time the delegation met MBoSE officials.“It was two years ago that we went to seek help in this matter. It did not materialise as there was no police station at Umsohlait which will serve as the strong room,” he said. According to them, they maintained there was an operational police station at Umsohlait and police outpost at Umsiang which will cover the necessary provisional requirement for setting up the SSLC examination centre at Umsohlait.
