POCSO Act against 19-year-old
NONGSTOIN: A woman filed a written report at Nongstoin Women Police Station on Monday around 4 pm that her 16-year-old had gone missing from their home since January 21. On receiving information, the Women PS recovered the girl from the house of 19-year-old Brightstar Shangdiar from the same village. Both of them were sent for medical examination and the medical officer opined that that there had been recent sexual activity. Considering the stringent provisions of POCSO Act, the Women Police has register the case under section 3(a)/4 POCSO Act. The investigation is on.

Border tension relieved
SHILLONG: The situation in the Meghalaya-Assam border of Khanduli has returned to normalcy. When contacted, the SP West Jaintia Hills, Vivek Syiem said that situation in the area is normal. It may be mentioned that locals pelted stones at vehicle of Assam police while they were allegedly chasing a sand laden truck in Jowai.

Contraband recovered
SHILLONG: Police recently arrested three persons after they were seen with Double Tiger Grade-I Genuine Drugs Production made product. On January 20, acting on tip off, police arrested three persons namely Tongte D Shira (49), Santosh R Marak (32) and Roger R Marak from a Maruti-800 car (AS-01S-9428) near Sericulture Office at Mendipathar-Soksan Road in North Garo Hills. During the search, they recovered one black colour leather packet from the body of Santosh R Marak, clipped with buttons written as ‘Double Tiger Grade-I Genuine Drugs Production, Made in Thailand’ weighing 554 grams.

Elephants trample man to death
SHILLONG: In yet another casualty resulting out of human-animal conflict, one person in South West Garo Hills was trampled to death by wild elephants. Police said the incident happened on January 22, around 5.30 am, while Abdul Kader of Tungruchar village was on his way to Tarapara village when the wild elephants trampled him to death. Necessary formalities were observed and the cadaver sent to the hospital for postmortem.

Vet official flouts code of conduct
SHILLONG: The Ampati Deputy Commissioner has informed that a report is being preparded to be sent to the Chief Electoral Officer after a veterinary official allegedly distributed cattle after the model code of conduct came into effect.

Meghalaya Society fee revised
SHILLONG: The State Cabinet has revised the rates for registration and renewal of society under the Meghalaya Society Registration Act. The last revision for the rates for the registration and renewal of society was in 1990. Now, people have to shell out Rs 1000 for registering a society from the earlier rate of Rs 250 besides the new rate for renewal of society has been increased to Rs 500 from Rs 100.

MGREGA workshop held
SHILLONG: The office of the State Rural Employment Society (SRES), the Nodal Agency for implementation of MGREGA organised a state level workshop on the Good Governance Initiatives in Administration of Indicative Framework and sharing of Best Practices on Tuesday at the Yojana Bhawan Auditorium, Main Secretariat, Shillong. The workshop was attended by District Programme Managers and Additional Programme Officers across the State.

Body found
NONGSTOIN: On the night of January 21, one unidentified male body was found lying on the road at Lumsohkhlur, Mairang under West Khasi Hills. The dead body was shifted and kept at Morgue Room at Tirot Singh Memorial Hospital Mairang. Mairang police also registered a case in this regard. Postmortem was done on Tuesday and no injury mark was detected on the body. So far, no one has come forward to identify or claim the body.

Student exchange programme
SHILLONG: A five-day Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat student exchange programme was held at KV Happy Valley Shillong from January 18 to January 22. A team consisting of 24 students and four teachers from various Kendriya Vidyalayas of Jabalpur Region, Madhya Pradesh visited the state where they visited some of the tourist spots including Shillong Peak, Don Bosco Museum, Golf course, Wards Lake and Sohra among other places.

DLSA to hold legal awareness
camp in EGH
TURA: The District Legal Services Authority in East Garo Hills in collaboration with the District Administration and authorities of Samanda Block is organizing a legal awareness camp on the Jan 29 at Samanda Market from 9:30 am as per the new module developed by the National Legal Services Authority. Awareness on various topics ranging from issues related to labour,  persons with disabilities, children, senior citizens, road safety and accident, victims of trafficking, scheduled tribes, welfare and poverty alleviation schemes will be given by the respective departments and legal aid counsels during the programme. The Legal Awareness Camp will also connect the people with the schemes being run by the main departments for which steps have been taken by holding a meeting with the respective Nokmas, Sordars, Headmen and Secretaries/representatives of the villages/areas falling under the Samanda Block, the Secretary of DLSA informed.

Marian Sodality Silver Jubilee concludes
TURA: The Silver Jubilee year Convention of Marian Sodality of Tura Diocese came to a close by ceremoniously retiring the Jubilee flag by Right Reverend Andrew Marak, Bishop of Tura and Reverend Antony Xavier, Director, MST, Tura diocese on January 21 in the presence of a large gathering of MST members from Garo Hills at Don Bosco School Playground, Chandmary, Tura. The Sunday Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Right Rev Andrew Marak, Bishop of Tura diocese along with other priests from parishes in and around Tura. In his homily Bishop Andrew said that we should repent for our sins and turn over a new leaf and live our life afresh and follow God’s will. He also urged all the faithful to strengthen their faith according to the Gospel of the Lord adding that while we make our living we should choose our trade according to the gospel values. Further, while appreciating the dedicated service of Marian Sodality he urged upon them to continue their activities for the benefit of the church and society as well.

28-year-old doctor at
NEIGRIHMS dies in Kochi
SHILLONG: A condolence meeting was held at NEIGRIHMS for Dr Mamta Rai on January 22. The meeting was convened by Prof (Dr.) A.C.Phukan, Dean, NEIGRIHMS. The doctor was attending a National Conference at Kochi where she passed away on January 19. Rai was born on November 9, 1989 at Jamshedpur. She joined the first batch of MBBS of NEIGRIHMS through All India PMT entrance examination and joined MD Dermatology as a post graduate trainee at AIIMS, New Delhi after securing 25th rank in the AIIMS PG entrance exams. She recently won the State level as well as National PG Dermatology Quiz (IGNQPP) 2017-18. She passed her MD Dermatology Examination with a gold medal in January this year. Few of the senior faculty members spoke about their association with Rai during her MBBS days at NEIGRIHMS, notably Prof. (Dr.) Noor Topno, Medical Superintendent and HOD of General Surgery and Dr K.G Lynrah, Department Of General Medicine. Fellow batchmates also reminisced their association with her.
