NPP leader lodges plaint against ‘suspicious’ cash transaction

SHILLONG: NPP leader and former Assembly Speaker ED Marak has alleged that there was suspicious withdrawal of money from SBI Adokgre branch after the announcement of the Assembly polls on January 18.
In a complaint lodged with the Deputy Commissioner, North Garo Hills, Marak said on Tuesday that several persons had withdrawn huge amount of money from the bank branch and allegedly distributed Rs 5,000 each to the voters so that they would vote for the candidate of a certain political party.
“Since the withdrawal and distribution of money have taken place after the announcement of the Assembly polls, it has violated the model code of conduct,” Marak said.
He also met the Branch Manager of SBI Adokgre along with some residents of the area on January 22 in his office chamber to get clarification as to why such withdrawal was allowed.
Marak, president of NPP Adokgre Circle, quoted the branch manager as saying that he was not informed officially about the model code of conduct.
According to Marak, it was also alleged that some government employees of the area were also involved in asking the voters to give their bank account numbers so that they can deposit Rs. 5,000 each. The NPP leader sought the intervention of the deputy commissioner, who is also the district election officer in this regard.
Marak’s complaint mentioned the names of 15 persons who allegedly withdrew the money.
They are Mildana Momin of Balsrigittim, Penia Momin of Sakware, Probilinda Momin of Sakware, Henitha Sangma of Mingkrak, Renila Momin of Rangket, Roda Marak of Mingkrak, Sinda Momin of Aruak, Ferditha Momin of Balsrigittim, Josinta Momin of Chigranggre, Nikchi Sangma of Matchadu, Potmila Momin of Imbeng adap, Gresbin Momin of Waramja, Probani Momin of Ildek akong, Kilinda Sangma of Chigranggre and Selina Sangma of Tingba.
