SHILLONG: Tura MP Conrad Sangma said on Saturday the Congress was luring voters with blankets and urged people not to fall prey to its false promises.
Addressing a gathering of 5,000-odd at Rangatari in Rangsakona constituency in West Garo Hills, Sangma lashed out at Chief Minister Mukul Sangma for his “ill-conceived ideas” and projects that have burdened the state exchequer.
“Most of the funds released by the central government have not been utilised to its optimum. He (Mukul) has taken advantage of the central government schemes to leverage his political ground. But we should not allow this to happen anymore,” said the National People’s Party president, who celebrated his 40th birthday with prayers and by cutting a cake before the rally started.
“Late Purno Sangma had a vision for the people of North East and NPP as a party is committed to the cause of the region and its people. Our founder showed us the way and we will continue to follow in his footsteps,” he added while drumming up support for NPP candidate Subhir Marak. NPP flexed its muscles on Saturday with two campaign rallies in East Khasi Hills and West Garo Hills.
Addressing a huge gathering at Wahlyngkhat in Pynursla, NPP candidate from Mawkynrew Remington Pyngrope, who quit UDP, said the UDP-HSPDP Alliance will soon vanish after the 2018 elections.
He criticised UDP for never highlighting the plight of farmers and the poor in the state and said the party would fade away due to differences in the leadership.
Meanwhile, NPP candidate from Umroi and Congress defector Ngaitlang Dhar criticised Chief Minister Mukul Sangma for his dictatorship attitude that led to the resignation of several MLAs.
Other speakers were Nongkrem MDC and NPP candidate HS Shylla, NPP candidate from Nartiang Stephanson Mukhim and Sniawbhalang Dhar, among others.
At Rangatari in Rangsakona constituency, Sangma also spoke about the education scenario in the state and asserted that it would be a priority for the party. “The education scenario in Meghalaya is in a shambles. We have a vision to reverse the trend and ensure that our children’s future is secure.”
Fifty per cent of the primary schools are without infrastructure and 80 per cent teachers have not undergone any formal training, 70 per cent schools have no electricity and 50 per cent school have no toilets, Sangma said.
“Growth, progress and positive change are mere slogans of the Congress. They have no vision and commitment to make a difference in our citizen’s life. We have to ensure that this election will bring a turnaround and we as citizen of Meghalaya say goodbye to the corrupt leadership of Mukul and the Congress party,” he added.
