SHILLONG: NCP State president Saleng Sangma on Saturday called Sanbor Shullai, who recently joined the BJP, a “coward” who lacked leadership qualities.
Sangma, while speaking to reporters after the party’s rally in Laban, said Shullai left the NCP to join the BJP though he was supposed to run the party as the state president.
“He left the party because he does not know how to lead a team and maybe he is expecting more help from the BJP. If he was not a coward, he would have stayed and led NCP in the state,” he added.
The NCP on Saturday declared the names of a former BJP leader and a journalist as poll candidates from South Shillong and Mawsynram, respectively. Shullai represented South Shillong constituency.
The party’s state chief said there were many unaddressed issues in South Shillong and “kitchen wares will not suffice Shullai in the future”.
He added that the party would do whatever it can to win the two constituencies.
NCP named former BJP leader Vikash Gupta for South Shillong and Starfing Pdahkasiej for Mawsynram constituency. “In a few days, we will name some more candidates,” Saleng said. Responding to a query, Sangma said the BJP might have had secured good number of votes in South Shillong constituency in the past but now things have changed as there is a lot of faction within the party itself.
Meanwhile, Gupta, while referring to South Shillong, said they have worked with many political leaders but no one came forward to do good to the public, many of whom are unemployed, and the constituency was underdeveloped.
“Life is miserable in this constituency,” he said.
