MAWKYRWAT: A probe into the mysterious death of fishes in the streams in South West Khasi Hills has started after Deputy Commissioner I Laloo took note of the matter.
Several dead fishes were found floating in the Kynshi in Ranikor during the last few weeks.
The DC has ordered the Fisheries Department to conduct an enquiry looking at “all possible angles and causes”.
“I have ordered an inquiry by the Superintendent of Fisheries, South West Khasi Hills district, and asked for a detailed report,” said Laloo.
The deputy commissioner informed that the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board had also sent an inspection team on January 23.
“On receipt of these reports, necessary action will be taken,” said Laloo.
Laloo reminded locals residing along the Kynshi, Rilang and Umngi rivers in South West Khasi Hills that prohibitory orders under Section 144 are in place and employing explosives, poisonous chemicals, betting are prohibited because these practices harm the river eco-system.
“Any violation will be strictly dealt with as per Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC),” stated Laloo, adding that the SP has been requested to hold a close vigil on any violations of the order. Letters have also been sent to all Myntri and Sordar of villages concerned to strictly comply with the orders.
