SHILLONG: Prime Minister Narendra Modi would often refer to the youth icons of the state during his past addresses in Shillong to attract the young population. But Rahul Gandhi will take a different route when he comes to the state on Tuesday.
The Congress president will be the chief guest at a youth gathering where rock bands and others will perform at Polo Grounds on Tuesday evening.
“There is no other way to connect to the youths than the medium of music and hence the Congress president chose the same,” the working president of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee, Vincent Pala told The Shillong Times on Sunday.
The programme will start at 6 pm at 5th Ground and there is no entry fee.
Titled as ‘Celebration of Peace’, an evening celebrating Meghalaya’s way of life’, the events will highlight music, culture, tradition and youth, besides paying special tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
The bands which will perform include Soulmate, Colours, Khmih (Children’s Choir), Blue Temptation, Dewdrops, Da-Thymmei and Empirical Tribe.
The individual performances of Benedict Hynniewta and Lamphang Syiemlieh will also mark the occasion.
Pala said the Congress’s intention is to reach out to the youth and spread the message of peace and unity.
There are over 86,000 young voters in Meghalaya as per the official list of the Election Department.
Rahul to interact
with media
The Congress president will also interact with the media on Wednesday besides other groups to understand the ground reality ahead of the polls and to convey certain messages which the Congress party upholds. “The youth and the press are very important for us and hence, the Congress president decided to interact with them,” Pala said.
