Nongpoh: A day after the Nongpoh Town Committee opposed the proposed installation of a weighbridge in the area, two frontal organisations in Ri Bhoi – Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Northern Region, and Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF), Nongpoh Circle – joined the bandwagon extending their support to the Nongpoh Town Committee.
Notably, the Nongpoh Town Committee has submitted a petition to the Governor urging him to immediately intervene with the state government to stall the proposed installation of the weighbridge on the ground that it will affect the common people as such a big structure is being proposed to be installed in the heart of Nongpoh town.
Speaking to newsmen, HNYF president of Northern Region, Marcus Marten and RBYF president of Nongpoh Circle, Y Nongrum said the organisations will collectively extend their support to the Nongpoh Town Committee, adding that a similar project was also opposed in the past when it was proposed at the DTO office at Nongpoh.
Citing their opposition to install the weighbridge, the HNYF and RBYF said it will cause inconvenience to the general public as the town is already congested.
They also stated that the installation of a weighbridge will not only create problems for the locals but affect the smooth flow of traffic as can be witnessed from the temporary integrated check gate at 13mile, Byrnihat.
“Installation of such a huge structure will create various problems and, most importantly, pollution will spiral out of control and pose serious health hazards,” they said.
Such a weighbridge should be preferably installed in areas far away from the town so that the people are not affected, they added.
