TURA: Meghalaya Chief Minister and Congress leader Mukul Sangma has appealed to the voters to be cautious in selecting their next representatives and not fall prey to those seeking an entry into public life purely for making a fortune for themselves.

“Vote for leaders who are prepared to work for the people and reject those who want to get elected only to enrich themselves,” said the chief minister during an election meeting at Chengapara village of Gambegre constituency in West Garo Hills on Saturday afternoon.

The chief minister’s sister-in-law, Sadhiarani Sangma, wife of Zenith Sangma, is contesting from Gambegre on a Congress ticket.

He lashed out at the three parties-NPP, NCP and BJP calling them “self-centric” parties.

He said that although the NPP ideology claims to fight against communal agenda which is propagated by the BJP, yet it was in government with the BJP at both the Centre and Manipur.

“BJP  is having a communal agenda and desperate to make our country into one nation and one religion. We need to be wary of this,” claimed Mukul Sangma.

On the NCP, the chief minister targeted the Sharad Pawar party for siding with the BJP and voting against Congress candidate Ahmed Patel during last year’s Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat. Patel narrowly won the election to return to parliament.

He did not spare the current representative of Gambegre and two time MLA Saleng A Sangma accusing him of failing to develop the constituency for the last ten years.

“He (Saleng) was made a minister in my government because it was my job to give him an opportunity to do something, but he failed the people. He was busy in making fortunes for himself. He failed the people of Gambegre,” said the chief minister.

Saleng Sangma is contesting this election on an NCP ticket.
