SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) welcomed Manas Chaudhuri to the party on Tuesday at Congress Bhavan after he had resigned from the BJP on Monday.
Speaking on the occasion, Chaudhuri said that the felicitation programme resembles a “ghar waapsi” for him sans the religious activities and he puts it as “a different kind of ghar waapsi.”
He recalled the lessons he learnt in politics and the electoral setback of 2013 though he stated that he never thought he would contest elections again.
He quit Congress in 2016 to join the BJP last year, only to come back in 2018 and at the same time secured a ticket from the party for South Shillong constituency.
Chaudhuri added that he left the Congress camp as “there was no-involvement and no-assignment.”
Poll threat
Claiming that a section of the people is “very scared,” he drew the attention of the Congress leaders to devise a method to stop the business of threat.
“One candidate has already said that puja, Eid, Christmas are being celebrated by every community because ‘I am your protector’. Can an individual be a protector? Can the individual become a law onto himself? This is absolutely unacceptable,” he said.
Chaudhuri called upon Khasis and non-Khasis to take on a united fight against such “fear.”
He added, “We need to have the administrative machinery alerted for bringing the sense of protection and taking action against those who violate the election code when you get poll-time threat. Threat is not acceptable in election.”
Meanwhile, MPCC working president,Vincent Pala, guaranteed Chaudhuri a ministerial berth if he wins the elections from South Shillong.
