SHILLONG: Now, this is indeed some much-needed good tidings for the Congress ahead of the Assembly polls. The party has received a major boost in West Shillong after former BJP leader from the area Sony Khyriem officially joined the Congress on Saturday.
Justifying his decision, Khyriem said that although he had worked hard to strengthen the BJP’s base in the constituency with the sole objective of preparing for the polls, the saffron party decided not to field a candidate in West Shillong without even consulting
the party workers.
“We feel that it (the decision not to field a candidate) was a dictatorial and despotic decision and the best option for us now is to switch over to supporting the Congress,” he said.
Khyriem said the Congress now has a very good chance to grab the seat and all erstwhile BJP workers would work in tandem to ensure victory for the Congress.
The Congress has pitted Mohendro Rapsang against veteran sitting United Democratic Party legislator Paul Lyngdoh and National People’s Party nominee Havergail Bareh.
