Shillong: Election observers camping in the state to oversee preparations for the ongoing Assembly polls stated that there exists a congenial environment for smooth and fair polling in the state.
In a meeting with political parties and Independent candidates on Tuesday at the office of the deputy commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, the observers lauded the district administration for creating a healthy atmosphere and believed that people will vote without fear or intimidation.
In his address, PS Dkhar, deputy commissioner, East Khasi Hills district, urged political parties and candidates to adhere to the model code of conduct and also cautioned against any breach which would invite legal action against the erring candidates or parties.
Dkhar also informed that public meetings and rallies should be confined within the stipulated time of 10:00 pm. Further, second randomisation and commissioning of voting machines – EVMs and VVPATs – are scheduled to be held between February 15 and 20 and the candidates have been requested to be part of the exercise to ensure their satisfaction as regards the proper functioning of the equipment.
The deputy commissioner also said that the latest copies of electoral rolls and list of polling stations can be obtained from his office.
Making a fervent appeal for free and fair elections, Rahul Tiwari, general observer, said candidates should not appeal for votes on the basis of caste, creed or religion and any candidate disturbing communal harmony will be debarred from contesting.
“Let us ensure that a peaceful environment prevails for the electorate to vote without fear and intimidation,” he urged.
B Thakur, security observer for the district, said there has been no serious breach of conduct but if there is a sense of insecurity or threat it should be reported for the district election officer to take appropriate steps.
