Johannesburg, Feb 15 (IANS) Cyril Ramaphosa, the leader of South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC), was elected the nation’s new President on Thursday in a parliamentary vote following the resignation of scandal-plagued Jacob Zuma.
The new President was the only candidate nominated in Parliament and the announcement was welcomed by singing in the National Assembly, the BBC reported.
However, his appointment was met with anger by members of the ultra-left Economic Freedom Fighters party who walked out of the chamber in protest before the vote.
Zuma, charged with corruption, resigned in a nationally televised address on Wednesday.
