MAWKYRWAT: Taking a dig at the Mukul Sangma led MUA government for introducing ‘ineffective laws’, KHADC chief and PDF chief ministerial candidate, P.N. Syiem on Saturday called upon the people of the state to be careful in choosing lawmakers and should not send forth “children” to the assembly when it comes to making laws.
“It is very interesting that the Congress government do not want me to hold both the post of MLA and MDC in which it brought the Prevention of Disqualification (Members of the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya) (Amendment) Act, 2015, but it failed. On the other hand, Mukul tried to protect his friends who were holding the post of MLA and Parliamentary Secretaries by bringing a law but it fails as the court struck down the Meghalaya Parliamentary Secretaries (Appointment, Salaries, Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2005). This government is like a football team with no strikers and no defenders. It has failed,” Syiem said while addressing a public meeting of the PDF at Mawkyrwat.
“For 46 years we got a separate state but it is unfortunate that till now we don’t have laws to protect our land, culture and traditions. Till now most the laws were adopted from Assam. We need a strong team that can make strong laws to protect us as a ‘Jaitbynriew’. As electorate, you should be very careful while electing the law makers. Do not hastily give this job to ‘children’ who do not know how to make laws for they will introduce laws that will contradict and confuse us,” Syiem said.
Criticising former Deputy Chief Minister and former Mawkyrwat MLA Rowell Lyngdoh for not able to bring development, Syiem said that as a district, South West Khasi Hills was very slow in terms of development and it seemed that all developmental activities had gone to Ampati.
He also criticised former MLAs and ministers who were joining the NPP, saying that they choose the party because of their dreams of becoming the chief minister and cabinet ministers. “One gentleman told me that the NPP leaders are very good in convincing people, they fish without food (wieh ne ata) but they got big fishes, senior fishes,” Syiem said.
He also took a jab at HSPDP chief Ardent M. Basawiamoit by saying that the HSPDP under the leadership of (L) H.S. Lyngdoh was very strong in principles, but the driver of the present HSPDP has failed.
“Many leaders including MDCs and senior leaders from Mawkyrwat, Enbin K. Raswai was pushed out of the party,” he said, adding that he had earlier wanted to join the HSPDP, but after seeing the situation under the leadership of Ardent, had decided to decline.
Syiem also requested the people of Mawkyrwat to vote for PDF candidate, Hadrian Lyngdoh and claimed that the PDF is in a final fight in more than 20 constituencies.
“Earlier I thought that only 10 candidates are in the finals but now another 10 candidates are in the finals,” Syiem said.
