SHILLONG: The Meghalaya High Court has directed the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Thadlaskein Block, West Jaintia Hills, to make payment to beneficiaries who did not get the benefit of Special Rural Works Programme (SRWP).

Speaking to reporters, Angela Phawa, Martha Phawa and Kwill Phawa said that they were deprived of the Rs 10,000 benefits each under the SRWP scheme, which prompted them to file a writ petition in the Meghalaya High Court.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, president of Meghalaya People’s United Front (MPUF), Dawanpoimi Laloo said that some beneficiaries applied for Rs 10,000 under the SRWP but there was delay in releasing the amount to the petitioners.

Stating that the scheme was diverted to Iongpiah and Lumpyrdi which are urban areas, he said, “There was diversion of rural scheme to urban scheme.”
