SHILLONG: South Shillong Congress candidate Manas Chaudhuri has expressed optimism that the Congress will come back to power in Meghalaya.
Talking to reporters here on Thursday, Chaudhuri said that the people of the state have trusted the party.
“I can’t give excellent marks to Congress but they are definitely better than any non-Congress parties,” he said. He also said that the party will probably get the support of the regional parties to form a Congress-led government in the state and added that the people here do not want the BJP to come to power. “BJP’s little sops of giving money to churches are too little and too late as fears of people will not be washed away by having better looking churches and mosques,” he said.
He claimed that the BJP’s slogan of time for change will boomerang on the BJP and the party will be thrown out. He said that there is no BJP-NPP wave here as they have not been able to make inroads in Meghalaya.
“If they had made inroads, they would not have bought MLAs,” he said, adding that the BJP wave is waning because Christians and minorities feel threatened by the BJP.
Stating that the BJP should not be given any quarters here in Meghalaya, he claimed that religious minorities feel a lot safer with Congress and that the BJP will have a sorry figure in the polls.
