Meghalaya’s most wanted militant leader Sohan D Shira killed

Guwahati: Meghalaya’s most wanted militant leader and self-styled chief of the proscribed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), Sohan D Shira was killed on Saturday following an encounter in East Garo Hills district, the police said.

Kiling of Sohan D Shira, who carrying a reward of Rs 10 lakh on his head, came after NCP candidate Jonathone N Sangma had been killed in an IED attack that was suspected to be carried out by the GNLA in the same district on February 18.

Security sources informed that acting on inputs regarding movement of some armed GNLA cadres in Dobu area of East Garo Hills district, counter-insurgency forces led by a senior police officer was put into action promptly.

The encounter took place around 11 A.M. in Achakpek village near Dobu, in which Sohan was killed.

NCP candidate Jonathone N Sangma and three others were killed in an IED blast triggered by militants in the Samanda area of East Garo Hills district around 8 pm on February 18.
