Order on noise pollution
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) has asked drivers to be aware of the health hazards caused by noise pollution and asked them not to honk between 10pm and 6am. This follows the order of the National Green Tribunal, Eastern Zone Bench, Kolkata.

I can put a tough challenge too:NCP candidate
SHILLONG: NCP candidate from Mylliem constituency, Samuel Hashah feels that he too is a strong candidate and he can put a tough challenge for the other candidates in the constituency. Speaking to media persons here on Friday, he said that there are shortages of many basic infrastructures in the constituency. He further added that there are no proper sporting facilities besides the health care system also needs to be upgraded in the constituency for the benefit of the people.

HYC opposes use of fake work order for road repair
SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Nongthliew unit, has opposed the alleged use of fake work order for the PWD road in Sohiong Division as the work order meant for repairing a certain stretch was diverted to another place. Addressing a press conference on Friday, Artist Ryntathiang, sports secretary of the HYC unit alleged that Mairang MLA Metbah Lyngdoh was involved in repairing the Kyrsen road to Mawiong and Kharthangmaw though the work order was meant for Laitarted road.He added that the repaired roads, i.e. Kyrsen road to Mawiong and Kharthangmaw were not PWD roads.Ryntathiang said, “Work order for repairing the Laitarted road was given but there is no repair of the road and walking on this stretch is problematic during rainy days.”

Meeting of zonal, sector and police officers held
Ampati: With just three days left for the general elections to the State Assembly, a joint meeting of all the zonal magistrates, zonal police officers, sector officers and police sector officers for the three Assembly segments in South West Garo Hills district was held at Ampati on Friday. In three Assembly constituencies in the district namely, Ampati, Mahendraganj and Salmanpara have been divided in 26 sectors with total number of 126 polling stations. Addressing the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner & District Election Officer, Cyril Darlong Diengdoh reminded the Sector Officers of the crucial role they have to play on the poll day, like ensuring safe arrival of polling parties, timely reporting of voter turnout and replacement of EVMs among others. The Zonal Magistrates and Sector Officers were also familiarised with their respective police officers during the meeting. ADC(Election) HDB Sangma discussed with the sector officers on the communication plan as well as the areas of concern in the communication system, while ADC & PD, DRDA, D.D. Shira highlighted the various sections of the CrPC conferring magisterial powers on the sector officers to ensure peaceful, free and fair polls. A demonstration on changing of EVM/VVPAT machines in case the machines give problems during the time of elections was also demonstrated.

Child protection unit seeks help to identify girl
WILLIAMNAGAR : A mentally unstable girl who is between 12 to 13 years of age has been brought to Williamnagar on the February 22 by the Women Cell team of the District Child Protection Unit from Rongjeng Police Station whose name, address, parents, etc. are yet to be traced. The District Child Protection Officer, Williamnagar is seeking the help of the people in identifying the girl, her address and parents and anybody having any knowledge or information about the girl had been requested to contact 8575533817, 8014393298 and 03658-220000.

NEHU teachers rally against V-C inaction
Shillong: The North Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) organised a rally on Friday outside the Vice-Chancellors’ office in protest against the VC who has been accused of turning a blind eye to the administrative lapses in the varsity. The teacher’s body pointed out that the Vice-Chancellor has failed to address issues related to academic and financial health of the university and appointment and promotion of teachers. They further alleged that Prof. S.K Srivastava has been disregarding the career advancement scheme (CAS), which in turn has affecting the teaching-learning output.“The performance and standard of the University is going down rapidly because of non-functioning of the various authorities of the University. The executive council meeting which is supposed to be held once every two months has not been held for quite some time turning the council into a fiefdom of the VC,” said a statement from NEHUTA.The association has decided to carry on with its protests until the VC clears the desk by completing all the pending promotions by March 31, 2018.

SWKH DC expresses concern over disruption of Aircel network
Mawkyrwat: The Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills District, I Laloo has expressed concern over the collapsed of Aircel network in several areas of the district in the last two days which has caused great disruption in communication. The DC said the sudden shut down done without warning has affected many subscribers relying on the network in remote areas which have few telecom providers. It has also hampered communication for election related work. She added that that she has intimated the Chief Electoral Officer of this matter with a request to take it up at a higher level in order to restore connectivity in the area.

National seminar on ayurveda and yoga held
Shillong: North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy (NEIAH), an Autonomous Institute under Ministry of AYUSH, GOI, Mawdiangdiang organised a two-day national seminar on the topic ‘Role of Ayurveda and Yoga in Health Care Management’ on February 22 and 23 which was sponsored by North Eastern Council (NEC), Shillong. The Chief Guest, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH, GOI, New Delhi mentioned in his speech that NEIAH is a potential institute to start a world class Drug Testing Laboratory for the North Eastern state and also to help people to be healthy instead of treating their disease. There were a series of scientific paper presentations and discussion in the two days. A total of 15 guest speakers came from different parts of the country and presented relevant research papers on Ayurveda & Yoga.

Poll related cases on the rise
SHILLONG: There is no end to poll related cases being reported in Shillong as the polling day comes to a near.
On February 21, Justine Dkhar, an ex-MLA and BJP candidate for the 2018 from Khliehriat Constituency, lodged a complaint that Prakash Shylla of Byndihati uploaded false information on social media like Facebook and WhatsApp that his vehicle was caught red handed with huge amount of money. The act has maligned and affected the image of the complainant. In another incident on the same day, Kercydora Don lodged a complaint that around 3.15 pm, an unknown person entered Room No. 213 of Bethany Hospital at Nongrim Hills where her daughter was admitted and informed that Paul Lyngdoh (UDP candidate from West Shillong constituency) has sent them money of Rs. 10,000 and in the pretext took some amount from the patient and fled away. Meanwhile on February 19, Bankyrshan Borlang L Nonglait lodged a complaint that unknown miscreants stole his laptop containing data pertaining to the upcoming polls.

Annual day
Shillong: Army Public School, Shillong celebrated its annual day on Friday amidst great zest, vibrancy and elation. It was held in the newly constructed multi purpose hall of the school. Major General S K Dutta, COS, HQ 101 Area, was the Chief Guest on the occasion. The programme commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the Chief Guest, escorted by other dignitaries and the Principal.The students of the school presented a cultural programme depicting strains of Indian culture through the mellifluity of Swaagata’, followed by the ‘winged nymphs’, ‘Hawaiian graces’ ,’fluttering fans’ and strains from Scotland. The English play The Refund, the Hindi skit-Ajab doctor ki ghazab kahani and the dauntless Lochinvar spiced up the show, while the Mime conveyed a beautiful theme message. The programme culminated with the Waves of India, binding Indian cultures.

National Science Day celebrated
TURA: National Science Day was celebrated on Friday by the Don Bosco College in Tura after the date was preponed in view of the upcoming polls. During the programme, Dr Madhusudhan Saha, coordinator of the programme highlighted the significance of National Science Day celebration with technology based on renewable resources as the theme of this year celebration was Science and Technology for sustainable future. Principal of the host college, Fr Bivan Rodriques Mukhim, SDB, highlighted the life and contribution of C.V. Raman towards the development of Scientific culture in the country. The celebration was marked by power point presentations, open house quiz, poster and extempore speech competitions.

Body found
Shillong: On February 20, one unknown male body was found lying on roadside leading to Lummawbah. Police said that inquest and other legal formalities have been observed and the body was sent to Civil Hospital. After post mortem the body was kept in the morgue for identification and claiming.

Clarification
SHILLONG: Andrew Jyrwa, whose name appeared as one of the secretaries of the BJP East Shillong Mandal, said in a statement on Friday that he was not a member of the party. In the statement, Jyrwa also said he never attended the meeting on July 15, 2017, as reported. “My name was included without my consent. I would also like to inform you that I am also no more involved with the United Democratic Party. At present, I am not at all involved with any political party,” he added.
