SHILLONG: Conrad Sangma, the national president of NPP, was named as the new chief minister of Meghalaya on Sunday, which was coincidentally the second death anniversary of his father and founder of the party, Purno Agitok Sangma.
The senior Sangma, who was a nine-time member of the Lok Sabha and Speaker in the 11th Lok Sabha, died of heart attack on March 4, 2016, in New Delhi.
Exactly two years later, his younger son who is an MP from Tura, was elected as the head of the new government in the state.
Soon after the demise of Purno Sangma, Conrad stepped into his shoes and contested the bypolls from Tura parliamentary constituency in which he won by a record margin.
However, Conrad did not contest the Assembly polls and will have to contest within six months and win to continue as chief minister.
