SHILLONG: The 10th Meghalaya Legislative Assembly was constituted on Wednesday after the newly-elected 58 legislators took oath.
Pro-tem Speaker Timothy Shira administered the oath to the legislators in the Assembly at Rilbong.
While the Williamnagar seat is still vacant, Mukul Sangma is holding two seats, Ampati and Songsak. Hence the number of legislators who took the oath stood at 58.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who was sworn in on Tuesday, did not take oath since he is not an elected member.
There are 31 new faces in the 10th Assembly and the number of former legislators who returned to the Assembly after one or two terms is seven.
There are two bureaucrats-turned-politicians in the new House, HM Shangpliang and SK Sunn.
House to miss veterans
The 10th House will miss former chief ministers DD Lapang and SC Marak, former deputy chief minister RC Laloo and former Health and Family Welfare Minister Roshan Warjri.
While Lapang could ensure the victory of his candidate Mayralborn Syiem from Nongpoh, Marak could not retain his Resubelpara seat.
Warjri, who had represented North Shillong and Laloo who was from Jowai, missed the opportunity to retain Congress MLAs in their respective constituencies.
The new House will also miss articulate legislators like Paul Lyngdoh, Jemino Mawthoh and Ardent Basaiawmoit.
