SHILLONG: A person identified as Jimphas Wanniang succumbed to his injuries on Monday after unknown miscreants had assaulted him on Friday at Kyrdum, West Khasi Hills.

Wanniang had gone to Langpih market to buy vegetables for his children on Friday but he did not return that evening. The family members were informed that he had been spotted lying on the ground by people who went for morning walk at Lailad.

People then took him on an ambulance to Nonglang where the doctors referred him to Civil Hospital Nongstoin. Since his condition was critical, he was taken to NEIGRIHMS where he passed away on Monday evening.

He sustained grievous injuries on the head, eyes and the miscreants also hit him with stones.

It was learnt that some years back, he was suspected to be a menshohnoh which pertains to the beliefs of the Khasis about some people who hunt for blood to feed a mysterious serpent (U Thlen).

Iubilis Khardewsaw, wife of the deceased said that her husband had no enmity with anyone and said he was a daily wage labourer.

She added that he would visit the Langpih market when he had enough money and would go to Umwahlang and take a walk to Kyrdum where the miscreants attacked him.

Wanniang’s siblings, Phridian Wanniang and Tobias Wanniang, urged the authorities to take the matter seriously.

The post mortem has been conducted and the police are investigating the crime.
