SHILLONG: ‘Unfortunate’ was the word that Home Minister James Sangma used on Wednesday to describe the murder of RTI activist and youth leader Poipynhun Majaw and the violence at the KSU rally on Tuesday.
Sangma said he was personally monitoring the matter and that police were committed to ensure justice.
When asked about the nature of killing of Majaw, who was the president of the Jaintia Youth Federation (JYF), Sangma said investigation was on.
The RTI activist was found murdered at Khliehriat on Monday night.
The 40th anniversary celebration of the Khasi Students’ Union in the city on Tuesday turned violent and one person was injured and several shops and a vehicle were damaged.
While police are awaiting a report on the vandalism at the KSU rally, they are yet to make any breakthrough into the killing of Majaw.
Meanwhile, East Jaintia Hills police recovered a plumber wrench with blood stains.
When contacted, East Jaintia Hills SP N Lamare said police have some leads “which cannot be divulged”. No arrest has been made so far.
